Back to the category "Lake Pleasant Living"
Situated on the edge of a freshwater lake and adjacent to the Goukamma Nature & Marine Reserve, Lake Pleasant Living offers the discerning traveler superb facilities in tranquil surrounds.
More than a hotel room, our spacious suites are equipped with all the modern conveniences. Experience ‘lifestyle living’ and not merely just a room to overnight.
Leaving Knysna on the N2 in a Westerly direction towards George and the Outeniquas, one passes through the picturesque Goukamma Valley, entrance to Buffalo Bay, and, just over the rise, 20km out of Knysna, lies Lake Pleasant.
A peaceful well-shaded Resort, 40km from George and only a 20km drive to The Wilderness. The Resort is situated in a natural Bird Sanctuary on the shores of tranquil Lake Pleasant (Groenvlei), the only freshwater lake on the Garden Route and, being outside the Winter Rainfall area, enjoys the most temperate all year round climate imaginable. Hear the cry of the Fish Eagle, or spot a Kingfisher or Loerie, maybe even a Paradise Flycatcher and a Black-headed Oriole - it's a Bird-watcher's paradise.
Between Mountains and Indian Ocean, at the start of the glittering chain of lakes, lagoons and river mouths, a garden of perennial green. Its natural attractions and scenic beauty of jagged mountain peaks, soft undulating plains, deep ravines and luxuriant indigenous forests, go hand in hand with long white beaches to complete the picture of this stunningly beautiful Lake District of the Garden Route.
The area enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate without the discomfort of torrid summers or icy winters; winter days are usually mild and warm and often enhanced by snow-capped mountain peaks. There is no rainy season and rain can occur throughout the year, mostly at night. Generally there is very little wind and the Resort itself is quite protected.
Recreation: Squash Court, Tennis Court, Swimming Pool, safe swimming at the Lake Beach. The Cottage Health and Fitness Centre is equipped with Sauna, Jacuzzi, Steam Room and Exercise Machines (holiday membership is available). The resort also boasts a large indoor and outdoor Games Area: table tennis, trampoline and a kiddies' playground equipped with swings, see-saw, slide and climbing frame. Available for hire: Mountain Bikes, Rowing Boats, Canoes, basic fishing tackle.
A fully licensed Restaurant & Pub, Peridot's, under separate management, is situated on the premises and is available for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as snacks, teas and take-aways. Phone (044) 343 2150 for reservations. Also included on the premises is a fresh-frozen fish & pasta deli & small Tackle Shop.
Within easy reach of hiking trails in the area, Lake Pleasant is also favourably situated for visiting all places of interest, from Tsitsikamma Forest and the Big Tree to Mossel Bay with its superb harbor and deep-sea game fishing. Only 100km away, travelling over good tarred roads via the Outeniqua Pass, lies Oudtshoorn: not only famous for Ostrich Farms and the Cango Caves, but also a budding Wine and Dried Fruit Industry in the vicinity.
On the eastern boundary is the 2000 hectare Goukamma Nature Reserve, part of which incorporates the 4km Lake Trail.
Alternatively, short drives or walks can be planned to incorporate the Knysna Forest (watch out for the Elephants!) or go back in time and take a drive along the old road between George and Knysna.
Another fun outing is to take a trip on the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe, the local steam train, for part or all of its journey between George and Knysna.
For the Outdoor enthusiast the area offers many popular golf courses and a variety of other pursuits ranging from bungee jumping to paragliding and scuba diving.
There are some really delightful picnic spots locally: Valley of Ferns, Jubilee Creek, Millwood, Garden of Eden and Brackenhill Falls, to name but a few.
Millwood's claim to fame as the centre of the first Gold Rush in South Africa petered out at the end of the 19th Century when eyes turned towards the Reef, although old timers still reckon there's gold in them thar hills!
The Office and Reception will be pleased to supply information on day trips in the area, as well as dining out, picnic baskets, theatre reservations, lagoon cruises, Nature Reserve drives, walking, hiking and mountain bike trails. Also details on transport to and from the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe and the George Airport.
Expect comfort and luxury in a relaxed environment when visiting us.
